This airplane was built in the 1928-1929 and they were the original airliner. The first airplane that made passenger travel viable. Before that it was like maybe one or two people in the back seat or front seat of a biplane and with this you could take 10, 11, 14 people along with you and at a fairly fast speed. At about 100 miles an hour which was very fast for back then. 1928 or 1929 was a long time ago but when you think about it it was only 25 years after the Wright brothers first flew. This airplane is a way advanced technology in that 25 years. If you think about it with the Wright brothers they could only carry one passenger. It took them five years after the Wright brothers first flew to carry two people in an airplane. So here it is only 20 years after that and we’re carrying up to 14, 15 people at 100 miles an hour is pretty impressive. Not only that but it carried the people and relative comfort in the back of the airplane. It’s also one of the first all-metal airplanes and originally airplanes were built out of fabric and wood to keep them light as well as aerodynamic and one of the problems with making a metal airplane was how do you make it light enough that you can carry passengers and fly. And that’s exactly what they did with the aluminum on this is they corrugated it so you can make the aluminum that much lighter to make the structure light enough that you could actually carry enough people and fuel to make it worthwhile. Well there were about 200 of these built and they flew passengers for about five years and then these were obsolete because they developed airplanes that used less power than this, could go almost twice as fast and carry the same people so we were just learning so much about aviation at that time and figuring out flight controls and handling and performance and all that sort of thing. Flying on this compared to an airliner is a much more relaxing experience you’ve got lots of legroom. You got an aisle seat. You got a nice big window next to you. We don’t go very high or very fast. It’s just very relaxing I like flying in the back too because you can just sit out and look at something as you go by and there’s the cows, the houses, the cars, swimming pools, lakes, whatever it’s just a very enjoyable experience and it’s a neat way to see the world. I’m a volunteer. All the folks in the orange vests are volunteers. We’re not paid for this. We just do this because it’s a good thing to do and we do charge money for it but it’s basically supports the program to be exposed to this and see a neat piece of history that you just couldn’t see any other way if we didn’t do this.
