Surviving a Turbulent Crash Landing on the SFO Runway

Flight 214 was nearing the end of an overnight
flight from Seoul, Korea, to San Francisco. Ben Levy is a frequent
flyer returning home. I fly pretty often for
business or visiting my family. I’m already from France, and
so I fly long distance a lot. I fly in and out
of SFO a lot, so I know the airport very well. NARRATOR: Many of the
other 291 passengers are Chinese, including
a group of teenagers on their way to summer
camp in the United States. Asiana 214. Heavy, runway 2-8
left, cleared to land. Landing checklist complete. Clear to land. On glide path. NARRATOR: The pilots
check a set of lights beside the runway that can help
guide them to a safe landing. Check. NARRATOR: The plane is less
than a minute from the runway when Ben Levy realizes
something is wrong. [MUSIC PLAYING] I remember
noticing that there’s a small pier that extend out of
the runway, and I’m like, “Wow. We’re very low.” And I dismissed the
thought, thinking, “Well, what can go wrong? There’s all the technology
on board to make sure that those guys don’t mess up.” NARRATOR: In the cockpit– [ALARM BLARING] Steve! NARRATOR: –a crisis hits. I’ve got control. [ALARM BLARING] [GROANING]
– Oh, God. Go around. NARRATOR: The captain pulls up
impact has torn the tail off the body of the plane. An engine is burning. If fire spreads to the fuel
tanks, the plane could explode. Let’s see if we
can open this door. [MUSIC PLAYING] NARRATOR: But getting down to
the ground will not be easy. I’m expecting, at that
point, to see a slide open. Right? The whole like– A,
you open the door, the slide is going to open. And there’s no slide. Woah. OK. Help each other. Come on. NARRATOR: Luckily, some
crumbled pieces of the fuselage have formed a makeshift
set of stairs. Ben Levy stays by the door to
help the other passengers climb down. Come on. [SIRENS BLARING] NARRATOR: At San Francisco
International Airport, Runway 28L is a disaster zone. Fire crews battle to keep flames
from consuming the fuselage of Asiana Flight 214. [MUSIC PLAYING] NARRATOR: With rescuers now

  1. I know this is a dumb question, but what’s the point of the pilots trying to continue to fly the plane when the cockpit is completely separated from the rest of the fuselage?

  4. i was in the airport waiting to board when it happened and i was terrified i thought the plane would speed into the airport. i just now found this video and i’m shocked

  5. I can't get how they let the plane get so slow so low. Id know that. Also, that could have been saved as for one many seconds go past before they power on and 2 tha plane was nose up and there was enough time to push the nose down and go around. They did nothing. That is not the safest way to fly.

They don't mention that 3 girls died, two weren't wearing their seat belt so where thrown from the plane, one was wearing a seat belt but the door next to her and her seat did some strange moving about and they think she may have had blunt force trauma from getting battered. One of the girls thrown off the plane then got run over by one of the rescue vehicles because she was completely covered by that foam they were spraying on the plane, but they say she was probably already dead from blunt force to the head when she landed on the tarmac. I remember this crash; we don't have many commercial airline crashes here in San Francisco so this was big news. Since some of the passengers were teenagers, some of their guardians came to the city afterward to be with them as they went through all the medical things, some were here for months and months. I'm glad big jets don't crash often.

  10. Why would you raise the nose? That's why the back of the plane hit the runway, he should've kept the nose straight and used full power


  11. I've always had a FEAR of flying…these videos confirm my FEAR is right!!! At least when my car's engine stalls…it's not in the habit of falling 30,000 feet from the sky into a most unforgiving ground! A true story: I remember hearing this story on the news a few years back. A couple after saving for many years decided they had enough money saved up to go a well deserved vacation. They flew to California…the plane crashed, but they both survived. On the way home they decided to take a train…it derailed! Again they survived. So, which one are they? Lucky couple? Unlucky couple? Picked the wrong time to go on a vacation…check!

  12. I love how half of the comments say they had someone on the plane, but a B777 can't even carry 500 passengers…

  13. A lot of comments are saying stuff like “how come the back of the plane is the safest when the tail ripped off?”. Well they don’t put anyone in the tail or anything just in case of if a crash occurs the impact from the force may rip off the tail.
    They say the back is the safest because if a crash occurs the plane is most likely going to go nose down, and the back seats would be furthest away from the front.

  14. Well, I'm just glad that most of the passengers were okay, they made it to their destination and hopefully the fire department has put out the fire quick enough so that the plane wouldn't explode and that everyone can get a chance to grab their luggage.
