Pilot project working to prevent airplane strikes and save threatened geese

SERIOUS THREAT TO AIRPLANES. A PILOT PROGRAM THAT RECENTLY LAUNCHED ON THE GARDEN ISLE IS SUCCESSFULLY REDUCING THE NUMBER OF NENE NEAR LIHUE AIRPORT. JENN BONEZA HAS MORE. JENN? JENN: I’M TOLD THE PILOT PROJECT USES TRAINED DOGS TO DISCOURAGE OUR STATE BIRD FROM NESTING CLOSE TO KAUAI’S MAIN AIRPORT. AND IT’S WORKING, WITHOUT HARMING THE NENE. THE HOKUALA TIMBERS RESORT IS ADJACENT TO LIHUE AIRPORT AND THE NENE OFTEN NEST THERE ESPECIALLY BETWEEN AUGUST AND MARCH, THEIR BREEDING SEASON. THEIR PROXIMITY TO THE AIRPORT POSES A DANGER TO BOTH THE THREATENED NENE AND TO THE PLANES. PETER FORMAN, AVIATION ANALYST: ” SO IT’S A REALLY SERIOUS MATTER.” PETER: “PARTICULARLY GEESE ARE REAL PROBLEM FOR AIRPLANES THE LIGHTER AIRPLANES THE GEESE CAN GO RIGHT THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD.” PETER: ” IF THEY GET INTO THE ENGINES THE JET ENGINES THEY CAN SHUT DOWN THE ENGINES. JUST LIKE AIRPLANE HE LOST BOTH ENGINES BECAUSE OF STRIKING GEESE.” SPECIALLY TRAINED BORDER COLLIES WERE BROUGHT IN FROM THE MAINLAND FOR THE PROJECT. THEIR GOAL. TO FLUSH THE BIRDS OUT AND SCARE THEM OFF-WITHOUT HURTING THEM. A MEMBER OF THE USDA SAYS IT’S SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED NENE NUMBERS IN THE AREA. REDUCING THE WILDLIFE POPULATION IN THE AREA CAN ALSO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF AIRPLANE STRIKES PETER: “WHATEVER THEY CAN DO TO DISCOURAGE DUCKS AND GEESE FROM NESTING NEAR THE AIRPORT REALLY HELPS.” JENN: ” ALTHOUGH THE PILOT PROJECT IS SPECIFIC TO THE HOKUALA TIMBERS RESORT NEXT TO LIHUE AIRPORT WILD LIFE AIRPLANE STRIKES HAPPEN ACROSS THE STATE.” 74 STRIKES HAVE BEEN LOGGED SO FAR THIS YEAR IN HAWAII. WITH DANIEL K INOUYE AIRPORT AND KAHULUI AIRPORT TOPPING THE LIST. KAUAI HAD 9 AIRPLANE STRIKES THIS YEAR. FORMAN SAYS THE NUMBER OF STRIKES HAS RISEN IN RECENT YEARS. PETER: “I THINK WE SEE PROBABLY MORE STRIKES THEN A COUPLE OF BECAUSE OF GROWTH OF CITIES AND SO ON GETTING INTO THE NORMAL HABITAT OF THE WILDLIFE.” JENN: THE NENE MITIGATION PROJECT WILL THE NENE BREEDING SEASON. THE INFORMATION WILL BE USED TO DEVELOP A MORE LONG TERM PLAN TO PREVENT NENE NESTING AT THE RESORT IN LIHUE. JOE: UP NEXT…HEALTH OFFICIALS CONFIRM ANOTHER RAT LUNGWORM
