Introducing…Transport for the South East

here in Southampton we are the UK’s largest
export port. We will see over a billion pounds of manufactured goods exported
every year. The challenge for us is how do we grow, we have a huge backlog of
demand we’re trying to meet all the time from UK manufacturers and the growth
we’re seeing is really tremendous so it’s critical for us to have great road
infrastructure to make sure that products can come from manufacturers all
over the UK to come to the port here to export all over the world. We’re shipping
something in the region of a hundred and fifty thousand cars a year right around
Europe and globally places like Southampton and of course Dover are very
important ports for us. Logistics is a hugely important part of anybody’s
business and particularly where you’re a car manufacturer as we are. We have something
like 350 truck movements every day across into Europe and back again
that’s very dependent on the infrastructure that we actually have to
deal with day to day. They all form part of that logistics flow to make sure we
have the right people, right products in the right place at the right time. We have 47 million passengers traveling
through this airport during this year, of which one in five will be a business
traveler so that’s approaching ten million business travellers. We’re the
biggest single site employer in this region that also makes us the biggest
economic generator of activity in this region. Just the visitor economic value
added to the region is about five billion pounds.
Partnering with GTR, understanding and working with Network Rail and anybody
who’s delivering surface access to the surface transport into Gatwick is very
important indeed. At Transport Focus we carry out a lot of research with
passengers and what they tell us is that value for money is their top priority.
People do not necessarily need to be in work Monday to Friday, 9 to 5, so it’s really
important that the industry, whether it’s bus or
whether it’s rail, understands their their market and that there is a market
now to offer more flexible season tickets
